The United States recorded a $6.2 billion goods trade deficit with India in August, according to official trade data released by the US Census Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The figure came as the overall US goods and services trade deficit widened sharply to $105.6 billion during the month.
The US trade deficit with India was among the larger merchandise trade gaps recorded with major trading partners in August. The deficit with India was equal to Germany’s and remained below the US gaps with Mexico, Vietnam, Taiwan, China, the European Union, South Korea and Canada.
The $6.2 billion India figure represents trade in goods on a Census basis and does not cover the broader bilateral balance, which also includes services. The data comes as trade remains an important issue in India-US economic relations.
The overall US goods and services deficit increased by $12.7 billion from a revised $92.8 billion in July. US exports rose to $315.2 billion, while imports increased to $420.8 billion, with the larger rise in imports driving the monthly expansion in the trade gap.
The US goods deficit increased by $12.8 billion to $136.6 billion in August, while the services surplus edged up to $31 billion. Goods imports rose to $342.2 billion, with increases in industrial supplies, materials and capital goods contributing significantly to the rise.
Despite the sharp monthly increase, the US goods and services trade deficit during the first eight months of 2026 remained below the corresponding period of the previous year. The year-to-date deficit declined by $138.2 billion, or 19.9 per cent, while exports increased by 11.8 per cent and imports rose by 4.4 per cent.
