US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor welcomed Major League Baseball (MLB) to India, highlighting the growing opportunities for sporting and cultural exchanges between the two countries during the inaugural MLBx Mumbai 3-on-3 baseball event.
Held at the Mumbai Football Arena in the Andheri Sports Complex, the event brought together prominent Indian cricketers and former Major League Baseball stars for a competition showcasing baseball to Indian audiences. The initiative sought to connect the popularity of American baseball with India’s deep-rooted passion for sports, particularly cricket.
In a post on X, Gor expressed enthusiasm about the event, describing it as an evening marked by sportsmanship and celebrating MLB’s arrival in India.
“Welcome to India, @MLB! What a thrill to have American Baseball meet India’s unrivaled passion for sports at MLBx. An incredible night full of sportsmanship. Play ball,” he wrote.
The event featured Indian cricketers Suryakumar Yadav, who serves as an MLB India ambassador, Shardul Thakur, Jitesh Sharma, Kashvee Gautam, Deepak Chahar and Radha Yadav. They competed alongside former MLB stars Nick Swisher, Jake Arrieta and Adrian Gonzalez, bringing together athletes from two sporting traditions.
Participants were divided into four teams named after some of Major League Baseball’s most celebrated franchises: the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.
Former National League Cy Young Award winner and 2016 World Series champion Jake Arrieta joined Shardul Thakur and Radha Yadav on the Cubs team. The Red Sox featured 2013 World Series champion Jonny Gomes alongside Kashvee Gautam and Deepak Chahar.
The Dodgers team included five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove Award winner Adrian Gonzalez, who partnered with Jitesh Sharma and Jordan Woolery. Meanwhile, former All-Star outfielder and first baseman Nick Swisher, a 2009 World Series champion, teamed up with Suryakumar Yadav and Rachel Garcia for the Yankees.
The Yankees emerged victorious in the competition, capping an event designed to introduce baseball to a wider Indian audience through an engaging, fast-paced format.
The inaugural MLBx Mumbai event represents an effort to build connections between baseball and cricket communities while creating opportunities to expand the sport’s presence in India. By bringing together recognised athletes from both games, the initiative highlighted the potential for cross-cultural sporting collaborations and greater engagement with younger audiences.
The participation of India’s leading cricketers also underscored the shared appeal of team sports and the opportunities to develop new audiences for baseball in a country where cricket commands widespread popularity.
As MLB explores opportunities to connect with Indian fans, events such as MLBx Mumbai could help strengthen sporting ties between India and the United States while introducing new experiences to the country’s diverse sports landscape.
