US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor engaged in high-level discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, focusing on expanding cooperation between India and the United States in critical security areas. The dialogue emphasized joint strategies to counter terrorism, dismantle narcotics and illegal drug trafficking networks, reinforce border protection mechanisms, and strengthen legal frameworks for ensuring that offenders are held accountable across both nations. Both leaders highlighted the importance of closer coordination between agencies to respond effectively to evolving global security threats and transnational crime.
Following the meeting, Gor expressed his views on social media platform X, describing the interaction as highly productive and forward-looking. He stated that the discussions covered multiple priority areas, including combating terrorism, preventing drug-related crimes, improving border security systems, and enhancing collaboration in bringing criminals to justice through coordinated international efforts.
The meeting took place shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagement with US President Donald Trump during the G7 Summit held in Evian, France. During their conversation, both leaders reviewed the steady progress of India-US relations across several sectors, including trade, energy cooperation, defence partnerships, technological development, and people-to-people exchanges. PM Modi also acknowledged efforts aimed at improving peace and stability in West Asia and underscored the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to ensure smooth global trade and economic stability. He further stressed the need to safeguard civilians, including maritime workers and seafarers, in sensitive geopolitical regions.
In a related development, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during his recent visit to India, highlighted the growing strategic alignment between the two countries. He noted that India and the United States share strong cooperation in key areas such as critical mineral resources, resilient global supply chains, and counterterrorism initiatives. Rubio described India as one of Washington’s most significant global strategic partners, reflecting the depth of bilateral engagement between the two democracies.
Rubio further emphasized that both nations have been directly and indirectly affected by international terrorism networks, reinforcing the necessity of continued cooperation. He underlined that India and the United States maintain a strong and consistent alignment on counterterrorism policies, driven by shared experiences and a unified commitment to addressing emerging global security challenges effectively.
