US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor attended the swearing-in ceremony of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, marking a notable diplomatic presence at the high-profile political event in Guwahati. The ceremony, held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, celebrated Sarma’s beginning of his second consecutive term following the BJP-led NDA’s strong performance in the Assam Assembly elections.
The event witnessed participation from several top Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other senior representatives from NDA-ruled states. The presence of the US envoy added an international dimension to the ceremony, highlighting the growing engagement between Assam and global partners.
Following the event, Sergio Gor expressed optimism about expanding economic cooperation between Assam and the United States. In his post on social media platform X, he noted that Assam and the US already share several commercial ties and suggested that Sarma’s leadership could open new opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships in the future. He emphasized the potential for identifying “win-win scenarios” that could strengthen bilateral economic relations.
The ceremony came after the NDA secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, winning 101 out of 126 seats. The BJP alone secured 81 seats, while its alliance partners, the Bodoland Peoples Front and Asom Gana Parishad, won 10 seats each, ensuring a comfortable majority in the state legislature.
Sarma himself won his constituency by a margin of more than 80,000 votes, reinforcing his strong political position in the state. In his remarks following the election, he credited Assam’s development progress to close coordination between the state government and the central leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “double-engine” governance model.
The attendance of the US envoy underscored Assam’s growing visibility in international economic discussions, particularly as the state continues to position itself as an emerging destination for trade, investment, and industrial collaboration.
