India and the United States are broadening their partnership across defense, information technology, healthcare, and investment, according to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Speaking at an event in Kolkata on Monday to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, Gor highlighted the growing range of initiatives connecting the two countries and the opportunities emerging from their economic and strategic cooperation.
The ambassador described the bilateral relationship as increasingly active across industries, emphasizing that collaboration extends well beyond traditional diplomatic engagement. He pointed to military exercises and defense partnerships as examples of the countries’ efforts to strengthen cooperation in security and related fields.
Discussing defense engagement, Gor referred to Exercise Tarang Shakti at Jodhpur Air Force Station in Rajasthan, highlighting military activities involving more than 500 troops. Such engagements reflect the broader relationship between the two countries as they continue working together on defense-related initiatives.
Technology and investment also featured prominently in his remarks. Gor noted that companies from India and the United States were investing in each other’s markets, creating opportunities for industrial expansion and business development. He highlighted American companies establishing substantial production facilities in India, describing these developments as evidence of the potential for deeper economic ties. Cooperation in information technology, he added, was progressing in both directions, supporting business activity and investment across the two economies.
Healthcare remains another important area of collaboration. Gor emphasized India’s contribution to the US pharmaceutical supply chain, particularly through generic medicines. He said the United States imports a significant quantity of generic pharmaceuticals from India, reflecting confidence in the country’s role as a supplier of affordable medicines.
The ambassador also indicated that further developments in bilateral relations could follow recent high-level discussions. He noted that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump had spoken the previous week, suggesting that additional announcements or initiatives might emerge.
Reflecting on the historical connection between Kolkata and the United States, Gor recalled that President George Washington appointed Benjamin Joy as the first American consul to the city in 1792. The reference underscored the long-standing diplomatic links between the two countries.
West Bengal Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta and Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal attended the event alongside other participants.
Gor’s remarks highlighted the expanding scope of India-US relations, with defense, technology, investment, and healthcare serving as major areas of engagement. Continued cooperation across these sectors could create further opportunities for businesses, strengthen strategic ties, and support economic growth in both countries.
