Trump, Rubio Discuss Implementing Multifaceted Cooperation Under US-India COMPACT
The US-India COMPACT, a major strategic initiative to deepen bilateral cooperation, was at the heart of discussions between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during Jaishankar’s visit to Washington.
US State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed that the talks focused on operationalizing the US-India COMPACT, a multi-sectoral programme covering trade, defence, energy, counter-narcotics, countering illegal immigration, and more.
In a post on X, Jaishankar stated that both sides discussed the expanding bilateral partnership, including collaboration in security, critical technologies, energy, mobility, and connectivity, while also sharing regional and global assessments.
The two leaders had earlier participated in the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, alongside Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, where Indo-Pacific security and strategic alignment were key agenda points.
Jaishankar also met with US Energy Secretary Chris Wright to discuss India’s ongoing energy transition and explore deeper India-US cooperation in oil, gas, and civil nuclear energy. The discussions support the broader goals of the COMPACT’s US-India Energy Security Partnership, aimed at increasing hydrocarbon production and lowering energy costs.
Launched in February during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington, the US-India COMPACT—short for Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce and Technology—is a flagship platform designed to transform cooperation between the two democracies.
One of the COMPACT’s key defence outcomes includes a new 10-year Framework for the US-India Major Defense Partnership for the 21st Century, aimed at bolstering security ties and enhancing joint capabilities.
On the economic front, the COMPACT outlines “Mission 500”, an ambitious plan to scale bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. In addition to trade and defence, the initiative covers emerging sectors such as space collaboration and artificial intelligence, positioning both countries at the forefront of future technology leadership.
With this renewed momentum, the US and India are reinforcing their strategic trust and setting the foundation for a results-driven, enduring partnership in the coming decade.
