The United States Embassy in India shared a message from US President Donald Trump, congratulating Taranjit Singh Sandhu on his appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. In his post on Truth Social, Trump acknowledged Sandhu’s extensive diplomatic experience and his role in strengthening ties between India and the United States. He also expressed optimism about Sandhu’s leadership and his ability to guide Delhi’s development while continuing to promote international engagement.
Trump emphasized Sandhu’s tenure as India’s Ambassador to the United States, noting that his contributions significantly advanced bilateral relations. He described Sandhu as a dedicated diplomat who consistently worked toward improving cooperation between the two nations. His experience in handling key diplomatic responsibilities has positioned him as a respected figure in global policy circles.
Between 2020 and 2024, Sandhu served as India’s ambassador in Washington, where he played an important role in deepening strategic and diplomatic partnerships. His association with US affairs extends beyond this assignment, as he held several positions at the Indian Embassy in Washington earlier in his career. He also represented India at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, contributing to multilateral discussions and international policy matters.
At 63, Sandhu brings decades of expertise in foreign policy and international relations. After retiring from the Indian Foreign Service, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 general elections. He contested from Amritsar but did not win the seat. Despite this, his administrative and diplomatic experience remained widely recognized.
Sandhu officially took oath as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on March 11 at Lok Niwas, in the presence of senior political leaders and officials. Since assuming office, he has advocated for a collaborative and solution-oriented approach to governance, aiming to address the challenges faced by the national capital and ensure steady progress.
