The United States and India are working to elevate their bilateral relationship, with trade, technology, and strategic cooperation emerging as key priorities, according to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during his recent visit to New Delhi.
Greer stated that U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to strengthen ties across multiple areas, including ongoing trade negotiations and collaboration in emerging technologies. He emphasized that both leaders share a strong personal rapport and are committed to advancing the partnership to a higher level.
Speaking in a video message, Greer highlighted the significant opportunities available to both countries as they expand cooperation in sectors shaping the future global economy. He noted that India’s growing ambitions in technology, particularly artificial intelligence, create a strong foundation for deeper collaboration with the United States in innovation-driven industries.
According to Greer, discussions between the two nations extend beyond traditional trade issues and increasingly focus on future-oriented areas such as AI, advanced technologies, and next-generation commerce. He described these sectors as major opportunities that could further strengthen economic ties and generate long-term benefits for both countries.
Reflecting on the recent meeting between Trump and Modi during the G7 Summit in France, Greer said the two leaders reaffirmed their intention to advance the relationship across all dimensions. He added that the trade agreement currently under negotiation represents an important component of this broader effort and expressed confidence that bilateral relations will continue to deepen in the coming months.
Greer’s visit to India from June 22 to June 24 formed part of ongoing efforts to move forward discussions on a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). During the trip, he held extensive meetings with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal to review key aspects of the proposed pact.
The discussions covered a wide range of issues, including greater market access, digital trade, resilient supply chains, reduction of non-tariff barriers, and enhanced cooperation in strategic industries. Officials from both countries acknowledged the progress made through recent technical and ministerial engagements and explored pathways toward concluding an interim agreement before a broader comprehensive deal.
Both sides reiterated their commitment to developing a balanced and commercially meaningful agreement that delivers tangible benefits to businesses, workers, farmers, and consumers. They also emphasized the importance of strengthening economic cooperation amid evolving global trade conditions.
As negotiations continue, India and the United States remain optimistic about expanding bilateral trade, promoting innovation, and building trusted supply chains, further reinforcing their growing strategic and economic partnership.
