Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States, US Congressman Ro Khanna outlined key topics expected in discussions between PM Modi and President Donald Trump, including immigration, trade, and security concerns.
On immigration, Khanna emphasized humane deportation processes, stating that those deported should be treated with “appropriate dignity.” His remarks come in light of the recent deportation of over 100 Indian nationals, with a US Air Force plane carrying deportees landing in Amritsar on February 5. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar assured that India is engaging with US authorities to prevent mistreatment of deportees.
Regarding trade, Khanna called for a balanced economic relationship, urging India to match its imports from the US with equal purchases, similar to trade issues the US has faced with China, Europe, and Canada.
Khanna also highlighted China’s regional expansion, including its claims over Arunachal Pradesh and tensions in the Taiwan Strait, stressing the importance of stronger US-India collaboration on defense and strategic issues.
PM Modi is currently in France, where he is set to co-chair the AI Action Summit alongside the French President, before heading to the US for a two-day visit at President Trump’s invitation.
