Dr. Rahul Sharma, a prominent Indian-American physician and healthcare innovator, has been appointed Chair of the New York State Board for Medicine after completing two years as the board’s Vice Chair. His new leadership role places him at the forefront of discussions surrounding medical licensing, physician education, professional standards, and public health in New York.
Sharma currently serves as the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Endowed Professor and Chair of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine. He also holds the position of Emergency Physician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian–Weill Cornell Medical Center. In addition to his clinical and academic responsibilities, he founded the Center for Virtual Care, reflecting his longstanding interest in integrating technology into modern healthcare delivery.
The New York State Board for Medicine advises the Board of Regents and the State Education Department on matters affecting medical professionals and healthcare standards. As its new Chair, Sharma plans to support the physician workforce, maintain rigorous licensing requirements, and address emerging developments that are reshaping the medical profession.
Artificial intelligence is among the technological advances expected to require careful consideration. Sharma has emphasized the importance of encouraging innovation while protecting patient safety and preserving public confidence in healthcare systems.

His contributions have earned recognition from several prominent healthcare organizations. Among his honors are the AAPL Roger Schenke Leadership Award and inclusion in Modern Healthcare’s list of the Top 25 Healthcare Innovators. He has also received national and state-level recognition from the American College of Emergency Physicians and New York ACEP.
Sharma’s appointment highlights the growing role of physician leaders who combine clinical expertise, academic experience, and technological innovation in shaping the future of healthcare.
