The United States and India are taking another significant step toward finalizing a long-anticipated bilateral trade agreement, with US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer scheduled to visit New Delhi for a fresh round of discussions with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and other senior officials.
The upcoming visit, announced by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, reflects growing momentum in efforts to strengthen commercial ties between the two countries. The discussions are expected to focus on advancing the broader framework of the proposed trade pact, which was initiated following a joint understanding reached by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025.
According to the US trade office, Greer’s meetings in India will address the United States-India Joint Statement as well as an interim agreement that forms part of the wider bilateral trade negotiations. The talks are viewed as another important milestone in a process aimed at creating a more comprehensive and mutually beneficial economic partnership.
The visit comes shortly after President Trump indicated that Washington and New Delhi were close to concluding a trade agreement. Speaking after his meeting with Prime Minister Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit, Trump expressed confidence that the two nations were nearing a breakthrough, underscoring the importance both governments attach to expanding economic cooperation.
Earlier this month, a senior US administration official also noted that trade negotiators from both countries had been engaged in extensive and intensive discussions. The official indicated that additional rounds of negotiations would continue in India, highlighting the seriousness of ongoing efforts to resolve remaining issues.
While US authorities have not disclosed specific details regarding the agenda or the length of Greer’s visit, the engagement is expected to contribute to the final stages of the negotiations. Both countries have consistently emphasized their commitment to building a stronger economic relationship and establishing a broader trade framework that could unlock new opportunities for businesses and investors.
As the talks progress, Washington and New Delhi appear increasingly focused on transforming their strategic partnership into a more robust economic alliance, reflecting shared ambitions for deeper cooperation across trade and investment sectors.
