External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in Suriname as part of a multi-nation diplomatic outreach aimed at strengthening India’s ties with Caribbean and South American partners. The visit marks a significant step in expanding bilateral cooperation and reinforcing India’s long-standing historical and cultural connections with the region.
Jaishankar was welcomed in Paramaribo by Suriname Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva and is expected to hold extensive discussions with the country’s top leadership on trade, development cooperation, healthcare, digital initiatives, and people-to-people exchanges.
India’s engagement with Suriname and other Caribbean nations is deeply linked to the shared Girmitiya heritage. The Girmitiyas were Indian indentured labourers who migrated to British colonies during the nineteenth century, and their descendants continue to maintain strong cultural and emotional ties with India. The Ministry of External Affairs has repeatedly highlighted these historical connections as an important pillar of India’s diplomacy in the Caribbean region.
Following his Suriname engagements, Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Trinidad and Tobago after concluding earlier talks in Jamaica. During the Jamaica visit, India announced several support measures aimed at strengthening cooperation and assisting post-disaster recovery efforts.
India pledged assistance to Jamaica through the supply of dialysis units, fishing boats equipped with engines, GPS devices, and related equipment. These initiatives were announced as part of support following the impact of Hurricane Melissa. Additionally, India handed over emergency medical assistance units under the BHISHM initiative during the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister to Jamaica.
The visit also saw the signing of agreements covering healthcare cooperation, broadcasting, renewable energy initiatives, and digital transformation projects. Both countries reviewed progress on existing partnerships in culture, digital payments, and capacity-building programmes while emphasising the importance of delivering tangible developmental outcomes.
Discussions further explored collaboration in priority sectors including healthcare, infrastructure, tourism, education, agriculture, and digitalisation. India also reiterated its commitment to expanding training opportunities under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation programme and increasing scholarships and digital learning initiatives for partner countries in the Caribbean.
Counter-terrorism cooperation and multilateral coordination were additional areas of focus during the engagements. Both sides reaffirmed support for stronger international cooperation against terrorism and backed efforts for the early finalisation of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations.
India’s growing outreach to Caribbean nations reflects a broader foreign policy approach focused on strengthening ties with the Global South through development partnerships, cultural diplomacy, and strategic cooperation. Jaishankar’s ongoing visit is expected to further reinforce India’s role as a trusted partner across the Caribbean region while opening new avenues for economic and diplomatic collaboration.
