The Government of India introduced the National Tele Mental Health Programme, Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States (Tele MANAS), as part of the District Mental Health Programme, in October 2022. Its objective was to enhance mental health service delivery in the country, and it has now achieved a significant milestone. The toll-free service has received over 200,000 calls from all over India since its inception, indicating a consistent upward trend.
In just three months, the number of calls received has exponentially risen from 100,000 in April 2023 to 200,000. With 42 operational Tele MANAS cells in 31 states and territories, the service presently handles more than 1,300 calls per day in 20 languages.
Over 1,900 counsellors have been trained to handle front-line services, addressing common issues like mood-related concerns, sleep troubles, tension, and anxiety. Approximately 7,000 calls received follow-up callbacks from counsellors, ensuring a continuous loop of care. Callers in need of specialized care are successfully referred to appropriate services, including the District Mental Health Program (DMHP) and nearby healthcare facilities.
Tele MANAS was introduced as a response to the mental health crisis in the country, as announced in the Union budget 2022-23 by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The initiative allows individuals to seek support for their mental health concerns while maintaining caller anonymity, thereby reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.
Tele MANAS is making significant strides in its mission to establish a robust digital mental health network throughout India, achieving the 100,000 milestone in just six months.
