The 6th edition of Exercise Dharma Guardian, a joint military drill between India and Japan, successfully concluded at Japan’s East Fuji Training Area, as confirmed by the Indian Army. Taking place from February 24 to March 9, the exercise was conducted on an expanded scale, featuring company-strength troop participation, marking a major milestone in defense collaboration between the two nations.
Lieutenant General Toriumi Seiji, Commanding General of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s (JGSDF) 1st Division, attended the closing ceremony. He commended the troops for achieving the exercise’s objectives and highlighted how the training strengthened operational preparedness and deepened India-Japan military cooperation. He also underscored the importance of the drill in enhancing mutual understanding and fostering closer ties between both defense forces.
The primary focus of the exercise was counter-terrorism training in urban settings, a key area of collaboration. Additionally, troops rehearsed United Nations peacekeeping operations, including Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) scenarios. Throughout the drills, both armies exchanged tactical expertise, conducted simulated operations, and built strong bonds of trust and camaraderie.
Beyond military drills, cultural exchanges were an integral part of the exercise. The Indian troops led a Yoga session for their Japanese counterparts and showcased Kalari Pattu, a traditional Indian martial art. Meanwhile, Japanese soldiers demonstrated their own martial arts techniques, further strengthening the spirit of collaboration.
The final phase featured an intense 72-hour validation exercise, where both forces executed a simulated counter-terrorism operation in an urban environment. The drill included heli-borne insertion, slithering, and room-clearing techniques, successfully meeting the operational benchmarks set for the mission.
Exercise Dharma Guardian provided a unique opportunity for both sides to share best practices for joint military operations. It reaffirmed the commitment of India and Japan to regional security and stability, reinforcing their longstanding strategic partnership.
