In a significant gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the issuance of Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Mauritian Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena Ramgoolam, on Tuesday.
The announcement came during a community gathering attended by over 3,500 people, including members of the Mauritius Cabinet, government officials, and National Assembly representatives.
Earlier in the day, Modi personally handed over OCI cards to Mauritius’ President Dharambeer Gokhool and First Lady Vrinda Gokhool. This event, marking the first day of his official visit, emphasized India’s dedication to fostering strong diaspora and diplomatic ties with Mauritius.
During President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit to Mauritius in March 2024, India extended OCI card eligibility to Mauritians with Indian heritage up to seven generations back, further strengthening historical and cultural connections between the two nations.
Mauritius currently hosts 22,188 Indian nationals and 13,198 OCI cardholders, highlighting the country’s deep-rooted Indian presence. The OCI card grants holders the right to reside, work, and study in India indefinitely while allowing visa-free travel and additional benefits.
Mauritius has maintained a welcoming approach toward Indian visitors, implementing a visa-free policy for short-term stays in 2004. In return, Mauritian nationals receive complimentary visas for travel to India, making cross-border interactions more accessible.
PM Modi’s visit, which continues until March 12, is expected to conclude with significant announcements. At least eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering maritime security, cultural initiatives, and community development are set to be signed. Additionally, Modi will inaugurate 23 India-backed projects and may introduce new development initiatives for the island nation.
