Indian-born technology executive and entrepreneur Sivaramakrishnan “Soma” Somasegar received special recognition in the U.S. House of Representatives this week for his remarkable contributions to the fields of technology, entrepreneurship, and community development. The tribute celebrated a career that has spanned decades and influenced both the corporate technology landscape and the startup ecosystem in the United States.
Congresswoman Suzan DelBene led the acknowledgment, describing Somasegar as an exceptional innovator whose leadership and dedication have positively impacted countless individuals. Originally from southern India, Somasegar moved to the United States to pursue higher education at Louisiana State University. His journey in the technology industry began when he joined Microsoft in 1989. Over the years, he played a significant role in shaping several important initiatives, including the development of Windows NT, a foundational operating system that contributed to Microsoft’s growth in enterprise computing.
Through years of dedication and innovation, Somasegar advanced through the organization’s leadership ranks and eventually became Senior Vice President. He held the position until 2015, overseeing major engineering teams and helping guide strategic technology efforts during a transformative period for the company.
Following his departure from Microsoft, Somasegar transitioned into venture capital by joining Seattle-based Madrona Venture Group as a managing director. In this role, he focused on mentoring entrepreneurs and supporting emerging companies navigating the competitive startup landscape. His guidance helped numerous founders refine their ideas, expand their businesses, and contribute to the Pacific Northwest’s thriving innovation economy.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Somasegar has remained actively engaged in community initiatives. DelBene highlighted his involvement as co-founder of the Seattle Orcas cricket franchise, noting that the effort played a meaningful role in broadening the sport’s reach and popularity within the region.
