The Medal of Valor, the nation’s highest honor for public safety personnel, was presented by US President Joe Biden to a 27-year-old New York Police Department (NYPD) officer of Indian descent, along with nine other individuals.
At a White House event, Sumit Sulan received recognition for killing two of his coworkers while responding to a domestic violence incident in New York City in January by shooting a convicted criminal.
Three police officers—Mr. Sulan, Jason Rivera, 22, and Wilbert Mora, 27, according to the police—went to the Harlem neighborhood in New York to look into a 911 call from a worried lady whose adult son had threatened both she and his brother.
The convicted criminal ambushed the three police officers, who he then shot, killing Rivera and Mora as a result of their injuries. At the event on May 17, the US president commended Sulan for acting quickly despite being a rookie with the NYPD at the time.
Nine brave Americans received the Medal of Valor, the highest award the US gives to a public safety officer.
