Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Kwatra marked the growing economic relationship between India and the US by ringing the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange, one of America’s most prominent financial markets.
The ceremonial event highlighted the expanding partnership between the world’s two largest democracies, particularly in areas such as technology, entrepreneurship, innovation and business. Kwatra said the occasion represented the increasing strength and future potential of economic cooperation between India and the United States.
In a message shared after the event, the Indian ambassador pointed to India’s ongoing economic and technological transformation. He said the country’s entrepreneurial energy is playing an important role in its growth and that companies listed on Nasdaq represent a significant part of the broader partnership between the two countries.
Kwatra was joined at the event by Atul Keshap, president of the US-India Business Council and a former US ambassador to Sri Lanka. Their presence reflected the role played by business organizations and private companies in strengthening commercial connections between the two nations.
Nasdaq welcomed Kwatra and described him as a supporter of the deepening relationship between India and the United States. The exchange also recognized the longstanding connection between India and some of the world’s most innovative financial and technology markets.
Established in 1971, is one of the world’s largest stock exchanges by market value, alongside the New York Stock Exchange. It is particularly associated with major technology companies and high-growth businesses, including several of America’s most influential corporations.
The relationship between Nasdaq and India’s financial markets has also expanded in recent years. Nasdaq entered into a strategic partnership with India’s National Stock Exchange in 2018. The collaboration was aimed at supporting advanced market infrastructure through customized technology for real-time clearing, risk management and settlement processes.
The bell-ringing ceremony is not the first time an Indian diplomat has participated in such an event at a major US stock exchange. In 2017, then-Consul General of India in New York Sandeep Chakravorty rang Nasdaq’s opening bell on India’s Independence Day.
Earlier that same year, his predecessor, Riva Ganguly Das, participated in the closing bell ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange to commemorate India’s Republic Day.
Kwatra’s appearance at Nasdaq comes as India and the United States continue to expand engagement across business, investment, technology and innovation. The event served as another symbolic reminder of the increasing commercial links between Indian enterprises and American financial markets.
As India’s technology and startup ecosystem continues to grow, stronger connections with global capital markets could further support investment and innovation, reinforcing the broader economic partnership between India and the United States.
