On June 18, the Consulate General of India in Chicago organized a grand celebration at Navy Pier’s lakefront to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, which falls on June 21. Over 300 yoga enthusiasts enthusiastically participated in the event. Consul General Somnath Ghosh delivered the inaugural remarks, setting the tone for the occasion. Following his speech, renowned yoga instructors Anu Malhotra, Mara Zimmerman, Saba Haider, and Yash Choudhary conducted a captivating session of the Common Yoga Protocol.
Consul General Ghosh highlighted the significance of this year’s International Day of Yoga theme, “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” and proudly presented yoga as India’s invaluable contribution to humanity, benefitting individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their religion, sect, or nationality. He emphasized the transformative effects of yoga on physical fitness, mental well-being, and the creation of a sustainable environment. He commended the efforts of yoga organizations and the Indian-American community in promoting the practice.
As part of the celebration, a photography contest was held, inviting participants to capture the essence of yoga through photographs taken at iconic locations while performing yoga poses. The Consul General awarded certificates to the winners of the contest.
The Polk Bros Park at Navy Pier was adorned with a festive ambiance as enthusiastic practitioners gathered on the lush green lawns along the shore of Lake Michigan to engage in yoga. This magnificent event witnessed active participation from various organizations, including the State Bank of India, Chicago, and prominent groups such as the Art of Living, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), Sewa International, Brahmakumaris, Isha Foundation, Federation of Indian Associations, Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur, Indian Community Niles Township, Each Life is Precious, and Yogapathic.
