The Indian American community in New Jersey marked a milestone in its celebration of India’s 80th Independence Day by setting a Guinness World Record for the “Largest Flagpole Number.” The special event also recognized the 250th anniversary of the United States, bringing together the two nations’ communities in a celebration centered on friendship and shared democratic values.
The record-setting initiative was organized through a collaboration between the Consulate General of India in New York and the Federation of Indian Associations (FIA), with support from Zoho. The gathering highlighted the strong people-to-people connections that continue to link Indian Americans with both India and the United States.
Several prominent officials attended the celebration, including New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Dale G. Caldwell, U.S. Congresswoman Analilia Mejia, Indian Consul General Binay Srikant Pradhan and Parsippany Mayor Pulkit Desai. Other elected representatives and members of the Indian American community also participated in the occasion.
The Consulate General recognized the efforts of FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya and FIA President Sreekanth Akkapalli for spearheading the community initiative. Their leadership, along with support from participating organizations and community members, helped turn the Independence Day gathering into a record-setting event.
The achievement formed part of broader celebrations marking India’s 80th year of independence and America’s 250th anniversary. India observed its Independence Day on August 15, commemorating the country’s freedom from British colonial rule in 1947. The United States marked its 250th anniversary on July 4, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Beyond the record itself, the New Jersey gathering demonstrated the growing visibility and engagement of the Indian American community in civic and cultural life. The participation of public officials, community leaders and residents underscored the role of diaspora communities in strengthening relations between India and the United States.
The event also provided a distinctive platform for Indian Americans to celebrate their heritage while acknowledging their connection to American society. By combining a national milestone with a community-led achievement, organizers highlighted the longstanding cultural, civic and interpersonal ties between the two countries.
