Indian American technology entrepreneur and cricket investor Sanjay Govil is making a major contribution to the growing popularity of cricket in the United States. His latest project is a permanent cricket stadium in Frederick, Maryland, that is expected to provide a dedicated venue for professional matches, youth programs, and community events in the Washington, DC, region.
The Frederick City Council has approved rezoning 24 acres at the Gateway Property for the development. Located about 30 miles northwest of Washington, DC, the proposed venue will accommodate 10,000 spectators and feature a five-pitch cricket square. Plans also include a multipurpose community space, positioning the facility as more than a professional sports ground.
Govil owns Washington Freedom, a team competing in Major League Cricket. The franchise won its first MLC championship in 2024, strengthening its position in America’s developing cricket landscape. Govil was also among the business figures who expressed interest in acquiring Royal Challengers Bengaluru, one of the Indian Premier League’s prominent franchises, in 2025.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Govil spent his early years in India before moving to the United States. He grew up on the IIT Delhi campus, where his father, mathematician Narendra Kumar Govil, was a professor. After relocating to Alabama, Sanjay attended Auburn High School and later Auburn University, where he studied electrical engineering. He subsequently earned a master’s degree from Syracuse University and pursued graduate studies at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Govil built his American business career in technology, working for IBM and Verizon before launching Infinite Computer Solutions in 2001. He reportedly started the company with about $1,000 in savings after moving to the Washington, DC, area with his wife, Vidya Govil. The company eventually developed into a global technology enterprise serving industries including healthcare, telecommunications, and financial services.
He later expanded into healthcare technology by establishing Zyter, a digital health company. His business interests have contributed substantially to his estimated wealth, which has been reported at around $2 billion.
Govil has also expanded his cricket investments internationally. Besides Washington Freedom, he acquired a 50% interest in Welsh Fire, a franchise in England’s Hundred competition, in 2025.
For Govil, the Maryland stadium represents a broader effort to establish cricket infrastructure in America. The project could give the region’s growing cricket community a permanent venue while helping introduce the sport to younger generations and a wider American audience.
