The Indian American Public Affairs Council organized another edition of its “Conversations Over Coffee” series in Houston, bringing together residents, civic leaders, and public officials for a discussion centered on local governance, taxation, and community engagement. The event featured Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector Annette Ramirez, who addressed several important issues affecting homeowners, businesses, and voters across the county.
Hosted at Winfield’s Chocolate Bar in Houston, the gathering created an opportunity for attendees to directly interact with county leadership and gain practical information about navigating tax systems, understanding exemptions, and accessing public services. The session aimed to increase civic awareness while encouraging greater community participation in local government matters.
The event was opened by IAPAC board member Barath Menon, who spoke about the significance of informed civic involvement within diverse communities. The discussion was moderated by Sindhu Menon, Harris County Executive Director and Chief Information Officer, who guided conversations on topics ranging from property taxes to voter registration systems.
During the session, Ramirez highlighted several modernization initiatives being introduced by the Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office to improve efficiency and public accessibility. One of the primary developments discussed was MyHarrisCountyTax.com, a digital platform designed to simplify tax-related services for residents.
According to Ramirez, the online system allows users to manage multiple properties, receive reminders, create payment plans, and automate bank payments through a single account. She explained that the county’s goal is to provide taxpayers with a more convenient and user-friendly experience through updated technology and streamlined digital services.
The discussion also covered ongoing efforts to replace outdated systems and improve transaction capabilities across county offices. Ramirez shared details about the county’s transition toward a more advanced voter registration infrastructure equipped with improved geographic mapping and data management tools to increase operational accuracy.
A major focus of the event centered on property tax exemptions available to residents. Ramirez encouraged homeowners to ensure they have filed all eligible exemptions, including homestead, senior citizen, disability, and business property exemptions. She emphasized that many residents may qualify for tax reductions without realizing it, making public education especially important.
The conversation further explored challenges linked to property tax protests and disparities in awareness among communities throughout Harris County. Ramirez discussed outreach campaigns aimed at educating residents about exemption opportunities and protest procedures through neighborhood engagement efforts.
