The Indian American Public Affairs Council (IAPAC) recently organized a community-focused candidate forum, offering residents an opportunity to interact with contenders for Bellaire City Council Position 4 ahead of the upcoming May special election. The event, part of the “Conversations Over Coffee” initiative, created a platform for meaningful civic dialogue in Bellaire, a city recognized for its strong residential communities and quality living standards.
Candidates Todd Thurber, Kevin Newman, and Gay Mayeux participated in the discussion, each presenting unique viewpoints shaped by their professional expertise. Shuba Grewal, another candidate known for advocating transparency and responsible growth, was unable to attend due to prior commitments. The forum brought forward diverse perspectives on governance, infrastructure, and community priorities.
Todd Thurber, drawing from his background in civil engineering, stressed the importance of long-term infrastructure planning. He highlighted the need for structured development programs and proactive strategies to address aging systems and recurring flooding issues. Kevin Newman, an entrepreneur, emphasized efficiency and accountability in governance, advocating for a practical, results-oriented approach to city management and responsible use of public funds.
Gay Mayeux, with experience in financial leadership, focused on fiscal discipline and strategic planning. She underlined the importance of aligning budgets with long-term goals to ensure sustainable development while maintaining accountability in spending. Across the discussion, candidates shared common concerns, particularly around infrastructure investment and preserving the city’s quality of life.
Flood mitigation emerged as a key issue, with participants discussing solutions such as improving drainage systems and strengthening regional coordination. The conversation also explored the challenge of balancing economic growth with the preservation of Bellaire’s residential character. Candidates agreed on attracting quality businesses while safeguarding neighborhoods from excessive development.
Public safety, modernization of infrastructure, and transparent governance were also central themes. The event concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, reflecting strong community interest in local decision-making. Organizers highlighted the importance of such forums in encouraging informed civic participation and strengthening community engagement.
