India and the United States are preparing to sign a renewed 10-year defense framework agreement later this year, according to US Senior Defense Spokesperson Colonel Chris Devine. This development follows a conversation between US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The Pentagon confirmed that the two sides aim to formalize the agreement when they meet in person later in 2025.
During their phone discussion, Secretary Hegseth underscored the strategic importance of India as a key defense partner in South Asia. The conversation also included a review of significant progress made on defense objectives laid out in the February 2025 joint declaration by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi.
According to an official statement, the leaders addressed various issues including ongoing US defense sales to India and the need to enhance defense industrial cooperation. The framework will serve as a foundation for expanding defense production, technology sharing, and interoperability between the armed forces of both nations.
The Indian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the discussion covered a broad range of subjects—from military training programs and personnel exchanges to industrial collaboration and logistics support. Both nations agreed to increase joint military exercises and work with like-minded partners in the region.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh shared his remarks on X (formerly Twitter), stating that he had a “productive conversation” with Secretary Hegseth and expressed gratitude for America’s consistent support in India’s counter-terrorism efforts. He noted that the upcoming agreement would further strengthen defense ties and support long-term capacity building.
The upcoming 10-year framework is expected to deepen trust and elevate defense engagement between the two nations, marking a milestone in India-US relations. It will emphasize not just equipment sales, but also supply chain integration and enhanced interoperability—crucial for regional stability and shared security goals.
This agreement reflects the growing strategic convergence between India and the US and sets the tone for a robust defense partnership over the next decade.
