India is preparing to introduce a major manufacturing initiative designed to strengthen local production capabilities and reduce dependence on imported goods across several important industries. The upcoming “Made in India Brand Scheme” is expected to encourage domestic manufacturing while helping Indian products gain stronger recognition in international markets.
The announcement was made by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia during the Confederation of Indian Industry Annual Business Summit 2026. According to officials, the government has identified close to 100 products that are either not being manufactured within the country or are currently produced in inadequate quantities to meet demand.
Authorities have already shortlisted several products considered strategically important for future expansion. These include automobile axles and motorcycle-related components, among other industrial items. The objective is to increase local production capacity and create opportunities for Indian manufacturers to compete more effectively in both domestic and global markets.
As part of the initiative, the government plans to introduce a dedicated branding and certification system that will verify value addition and quality standards in Indian-made goods. Officials believe this move could help establish greater trust in locally manufactured products while building a stronger global identity for Indian industry.
The scheme is expected to include a unique logo that will represent certified Indian manufacturing standards. Policymakers indicated that an earlier pilot project in the steel industry produced positive outcomes, encouraging authorities to consider expanding the model to multiple sectors after discussions with industry stakeholders.
Government officials also emphasized the importance of long-term private investment in strengthening India’s industrial ecosystem. Businesses were encouraged to take advantage of opportunities created through recently finalized free trade agreements, which could open new export channels for Indian companies and improve access to international markets.
Another major focus of the initiative is the integration of advanced technologies into manufacturing processes. Officials highlighted the increasing role of artificial intelligence in improving industrial productivity, operational efficiency, and innovation. The government believes technology-driven manufacturing can help Indian industries become more competitive and future-ready.
The broader strategy aligns with India’s long-term vision of developing resilient supply chains, increasing exports, and positioning the country as a leading global manufacturing destination. By promoting higher-quality domestic production and reducing import reliance, the proposed scheme is expected to support economic growth and industrial self-reliance in the coming years.
