India and Greece are seeking to strengthen their defence and strategic partnership, with maritime cooperation, coastal security and shipbuilding emerging as key areas of discussion between the two countries.
The discussions took place between Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Greece’s Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, Stefanos Gkikas, during his official visit to India. The talks focused on expanding cooperation in the maritime sector and strengthening security-related engagement.
India and Greece, both prominent maritime nations, share common interests in maintaining safe and secure sea routes and protecting the interests of seafarers. Maritime security has emerged as an important area of bilateral cooperation as both countries look to deepen their strategic partnership.
Gkikas travelled to India to participate in Sagarmanthan, the Great Oceans Dialogue 2026. Ahead of his visit, he reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation with India during a meeting with Indian Ambassador to Greece Ravi Shankar.
Defence and security ties between India and Greece have expanded in recent years, with both sides increasing engagement across maritime and air cooperation. Their growing partnership reflects shared strategic interests in the wider maritime domain.
Air force cooperation has also contributed to closer defence relations. India has participated in Greece’s INIOCHOS exercise, while the Hellenic Air Force has taken part in India’s multinational Tarang Shakti exercise. These engagements have helped improve mutual understanding and strengthen operational partnerships between the two countries.
The latest discussions highlight the broader effort by India and Greece to build a stronger strategic relationship through defence cooperation, maritime security and industrial engagement. Shipbuilding and coastal security are expected to remain significant areas as both nations seek to expand their collaboration in the maritime sector.
