India and Fiji have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation through a series of high-level meetings focused on sustainable development, housing, agriculture, and education. The discussions reflect both nations’ shared interest in strengthening long-term partnerships across multiple sectors.
India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, met Fiji’s Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, to explore opportunities for greater collaboration in affordable housing, sustainable urban planning, waste management, and local governance. The talks centered on identifying practical areas where both countries can work together to improve urban infrastructure and support inclusive development initiatives.
According to the Indian High Commission in Fiji, the meeting highlighted the importance of enhancing the India-Fiji development partnership while promoting sustainable solutions for growing urban communities. Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation through knowledge sharing and joint initiatives that benefit local communities.
In another key engagement, Mehta met Fiji’s Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, to discuss expanding collaboration in the coconut and coir industries. The discussions included opportunities to work with Fiji Coconut Millers to support value-added production and strengthen economic cooperation in the agricultural sector. The meeting also reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to broaden development partnerships through sector-specific initiatives.
Earlier in the week, the Indian envoy also held talks with Fiji’s Agriculture Minister, Tomasi Tunabuna. The discussions focused on increasing cooperation in agriculture and agricultural technology, highlighting the growing importance of innovation and modern farming practices in strengthening food security and rural development.
Beyond government-level engagements, India continued its cultural and educational outreach in Fiji. The High Commission of India, together with the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Suva, donated books to the Pacific Nations School. The initiative was aimed at encouraging reading, supporting lifelong learning, and promoting educational and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
India and Fiji share a long-standing relationship built on mutual respect, cultural connections, and close people-to-people ties. India has supported Fiji’s development in areas such as capacity building, education, and infrastructure over the years.
