On May 22, 2023, the Parramatta City Council chose Sameer Pandey as their next mayor. Pandey is now the first person of Indian descent to hold the post in the suburb of Greater Western Sydney as a result of the appointment. Sameer Pandey was first elected to the council in 2017 and became the first Indian-born deputy mayor of the city in 2022.
Donna Davis, who had been elected to serve as the State Member for Parramatta in Australia’s New South Wales state, resigned from the position after being elected.
Pandey asserted that the City of Parramatta is the geographic center of Greater Sydney, a significant economic powerhouse, and the best area to live in Sydney. He went on to say that it was an honor to serve as the council president of one of the fastest-growing cities in Australia.
He was quoted in the news release as stating, “Parramatta is home to a dynamic and varied population, and I’m eager to lead the city as it cements itself as Sydney’s second CBD (central business district) and the focus of some of its most exciting prospects.
An IT expert and small company owner, Pandey “is passionate about ensuring the council delivers what the community and local businesses need and positioning the City of Parramatta as a smart city,” according to a press release.
