Veteran Indian film icon Dharmendra was posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, during the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 25. The prestigious award was received on his behalf by his wife and veteran actress Hema Malini, in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu.
The ceremony witnessed an emotional moment when Dharmendra’s name was announced. His daughter Ahana Deol was seen deeply moved, while her husband Vaibhav Vohra remained by her side offering support. Several top dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, were present at the event.
Hema Malini, while speaking to ANI, expressed that the honour brought immense pride to the entire family. She said Dharmendra would have been extremely happy to receive the recognition during his lifetime and added that his millions of fans would have celebrated the achievement with equal joy. She also described the award as long overdue, acknowledging his monumental contribution to Indian cinema.
Dharmendra was celebrated as one of the most influential actors in Hindi film history, often referred to as the “He-Man” of Bollywood. His career spanned more than six decades and included appearances in over 300 films. His iconic performances in classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Anupama, and Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke continue to be cherished by audiences across generations.
The Padma Awards for 2026 were announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day. These honours recognise individuals who have made exceptional contributions in fields such as arts, literature, medicine, education, and public service, highlighting their lifelong dedication to the nation.
Dharmendra had been suffering from health issues prior to his passing. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on November 10, 2025, after his condition worsened. Although he was discharged two weeks later for home care, he passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89.
Alongside Dharmendra, actor Prosenjit Chatterjee was also honoured with the Padma Shri award. Known for his extensive body of work in Indian cinema spanning over 200 films, Chatterjee attended the ceremony in a traditional golden kurta ensemble. His recent project Vijaynagar’er Hirey, directed by Chandrasish Ray, was also highlighted as part of his ongoing contributions to film.
