Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday that he is eagerly preparing to welcome Russian President Vladimir Putin to India next month. His statement came during a meeting with Nikolai Patrushev, the Russian President’s Aide and the Chairman of the Maritime Board of the Russian Federation, who held talks with him in New Delhi.
The conversation between PM Modi and Patrushev centered on strengthening cooperation in the maritime sector—an area both countries have been prioritizing as part of their broader strategic partnership. The leaders reviewed ongoing collaboration and explored new avenues in areas such as maritime connectivity, advanced shipbuilding, specialized training, and expanding opportunities within the blue economy. These discussions reflect the two nations’ continued efforts to deepen economic and strategic ties across multiple domains.
Following the meeting, PM Modi took to X to share that he had “productive discussions” with Patrushev, highlighting potential growth in connectivity, skill enhancement, shipbuilding innovation, and maritime sustainability. He emphasized India’s commitment to advancing projects that enhance bilateral trade routes and maritime capabilities.
A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Modi conveyed warm greetings to President Putin and reaffirmed that he is looking forward to hosting him during his visit next month. Patrushev also briefed the Prime Minister on the preparations leading up to the annual India–Russia Summit, which is scheduled to take place in early December. The summit is expected to focus on key areas such as defense partnership, energy cooperation worth billions of dollars, and joint initiatives aimed at boosting long-term economic engagement.
Before meeting the Prime Minister, Patrushev visited the National War Memorial, where he paid respects to the Indian Armed Forces personnel who lost their lives in service. He later toured the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya and recorded his remarks in the official guest book, noting the deep historical relationship between India and Russia.
Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who is currently in Moscow for the SCO Heads of Government meeting, also met President Putin along with other delegation leaders on Tuesday. His visit further underscores the momentum behind ongoing diplomatic exchanges as both nations prepare for the high-level summit.
