The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) International has warmly welcomed the re-election of Kamla Persad-Bissessar, leader of the United National Congress (UNC), as the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. Persad-Bissessar previously served in the role from May 2010 to September 2015 and now steps into the position once again with strong support from the Indian diaspora.
Dr. Thomas Abraham, Chairman of GOPIO International, recalled the long-standing relationship between GOPIO and Persad-Bissessar, dating back to 1999 when the organization first hosted her while she was a minister in Prime Minister Basdeo Panday’s cabinet. She was also the Chief Guest at GOPIO’s 2014 Convention in Port of Spain and attended a special event hosted by GOPIO in Calcutta in 2011.
Prakash Shah, President of GOPIO International, expressed optimism about renewed collaboration with her administration, especially in key sectors like healthcare and hospitality. He underscored the vital role of the Indian-origin diaspora in the Caribbean and reaffirmed GOPIO’s dedication to partnering with Persad-Bissessar’s administration to drive regional progress. Looking forward, GOPIO is set to host two flagship international diaspora conferences in 2026—one in New York City in May and another in Mumbai in December. The organization hopes to have Persad-Bissessar’s esteemed presence at both gatherings, continuing to build on the strong foundation of partnership and shared heritage.
With her return to office, Persad-Bissessar’s leadership signals a renewed opportunity to advance the interests of the Indian diaspora and deepen GOPIO’s engagement across Trinidad and the broader Caribbean.
