The Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) has expanded its presence in India by launching new chapters in Mumbai and Gujarat, alongside its business wing, the GOPIO Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). This development was celebrated at a prestigious event on March 15, 2025, at Mumbai’s Garware Club House, attended by prominent figures from the city. Prakash Shah, the International President of GOPIO, was honored at the event, receiving accolades from Raj Purohit, GOPIO Advisor and Vice President of Maharashtra BJP, for his unwavering commitment and global perspective in fostering Diaspora connections.
Prakash Shah, a founding member of GOPIO, has an extensive background in leadership roles, having been appointed by President Clinton to the Board of the Southern Africa Fund, where he served for a decade as Chairman of its Investment Committee. Additionally, he has held key positions, including Chairman of the New Jersey Development Authority under Governors Florio and Whitman.
Reflecting on GOPIO’s early days, Shah recalled its 1989 convention in New York City, which brought together notable U.S. political leaders. He highlighted the vital role of late Guyanese President Cheddi Jagan, who personally supported GOPIO’s establishment. Dr. Thomas Abraham, Chairman of GOPIO, also noted that the organization initially focused on addressing human rights violations and, over time, has successfully integrated Indian Diaspora communities into mainstream societies worldwide.
Speaking at the event, Shah expressed optimism about India’s future, stating that the nation is poised to emerge as a global economic and military powerhouse. He emphasized the significance of the Indian Diaspora in contributing to this growth. He outlined two key initiatives: creating a Global Network where experienced Indian business leaders mentor young entrepreneurs in India, and establishing an international investment fund targeting startups that have reached a valuation of $1 billion on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
Additionally, Shah highlighted the upcoming GOPIO Convention, scheduled from March 28 to 30, 2025, in Brisbane, Australia. The event will explore the Indian Diaspora’s role in shaping emerging technologies and address key topics relevant to global Indian communities.
Since its inception in 1989, GOPIO has remained a non-partisan, nonprofit organization committed to strengthening ties among the 38-million-strong Indian Diaspora. With over 100 chapters across 35 countries, the organization actively promotes collaboration, networking, and economic development while fostering connections between Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), People of Indian Origin (PIOs), and their respective communities worldwide.
