FBI Director Kash Patel’s Holi greeting on X ignited a social media debate, with users expressing both admiration and criticism. While many appreciated the post as a celebration of cultural diversity, others believed government officials should only recognize US-designated holidays.
Patel, who has Indian roots, posted a striking image of a person covered in vibrant gulal, captioning it, “Happy Holi—The Festival of Colors.” While the message resonated with many, sparking warm wishes and festive cheer, some critics questioned whether a high-ranking government official should publicly acknowledge a non-American festival.
Social media users were divided. Supporters highlighted Holi’s symbolic message of good triumphing over evil, emphasizing its significance in fostering unity, forgiveness, and renewal. Many praised Patel’s recognition of his heritage, with comments such as “Happy Holi! A beautiful celebration of color, joy, and renewal.” Others admired his inclusive approach, calling it a “vibrant and meaningful tradition.”
However, detractors took issue with the post. One user expressed, “I wish government officials only celebrated American holidays,” while another bluntly stated, “Cringe. We don’t celebrate this in America. Read the room.”
Born in New York to Gujarati parents, Patel has never shied away from embracing his Indian heritage. His swearing-in as the ninth FBI Director was notable for his choice to take the oath on the Bhagavad Gita. A previous video of him touching his parents’ feet had also garnered widespread appreciation, further cementing his connection to his roots.
