Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia may not have won a Golden Globe for her debut feature film All We Imagine As Light, but she made history by becoming the first Indian nominated for the Best Director category. The film, set in modern Mumbai and focusing on sisterhood, earned nominations in two categories: Best Non-English Language Film and Best Director (Motion Picture). Kapadia lost to Brady Corbet for his film The Brutalist, while the Best Foreign Language Film award went to Emilia Perez.
Kapadia walked the red carpet in an elegant black silk jumpsuit by Indian designer Payal Khandwala, from her Autumn-Winter 2024 collection. The handwoven jumpsuit featured brocade detailing and a signature loop neck.
Several other Indian connections made their presence known at the event, with Indian designers showcasing their work on the red carpet. Mindy Kaling presented the Best Actress award in a metallic gold gown by Ashi Studio. The actress, writer, and producer paired the strapless gown with a form-fitting bodice and subtle slit.
Comedian Nikki Glaser also sported Prabal Gurung on the red carpet, wearing a sweetheart neckline gown. She later wore a fuchsia sequin gown by the Nepali American designer during her stage performance.
Lillu Singh dazzled in a sequined gown by Gaurav Gupta and represented a champagne brand on the red carpet. She later switched into a shirt and skirt combo by Ru by Rupal.
Indian designer brand Sabyasachi was represented by Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, who wore a Sabyasachi sari.
Manish Malhotra, a celebrated Indian fashion designer-turned-producer, also made a stylish debut at the Golden Globes in a custom black tuxedo with abstract detailing.
