The Jammu and Kashmir government will hold its first-ever Samvidhan Diwas (Constitution Day) celebration on November 26, 2024, marking the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will lead the event in Srinagar, with ministers participating in a reading of the Preamble. This significant event follows J&K’s 2019 transition from special status to a Union Territory after Article 370 was revoked.
Notably absent will be former CM Omar Abdullah, who departed for Mecca to perform Umrah. In a historic milestone on October 16, Omar Abdullah became the first J&K Chief Minister to swear allegiance to the Indian Constitution, unlike his 17 predecessors who took oaths on the erstwhile J&K Constitution. Until 2019, J&K operated with its own constitution and flag, which were dissolved after the region’s reorganization.
This year’s Samvidhan Diwas symbolizes a new chapter in J&K’s integration into India’s constitutional framework, highlighting its evolving political landscape.
