According to a May 10 announcement by Union Culture Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will open a three-day, first-of-its-kind exhibition in New Delhi on May 18, which is recognized as International Museum Day.
The celebrations, which run from May 18 to May 20, will also honor International Museum Day, which falls on May 18.
“The upcoming three-day International Museum Expo 2023 at Pragati Maidan is a historic event as it is the first time the government will showcase new technology and initiatives for museums. With the cooperation of various departments, including museum development, experts, and senior officers, India’s rich cultural heritage will be on display,” Reddy said.
According to Mugdha Sinha, joint secretary, Ministry of Culture, the expo’s mascot—the prehistoric dancing girl from Mohenjo-Daro—will be revealed during the opening ceremony, along with a graphic novel on museums, a directory of Indian museums, a pocket map of Kartavya Path, and a deck of 75 cards on various museums in India.
She continued by saying that PM Modi would also debut a virtual tour offering a sneak preview of the future National Museum in North Block and South Block.
The ministry, in collaboration with the Mumbai-based Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, has created a “museum on wheels” for the event.
According to organizers, the bus will also tour the National Capital Region (NCR), bringing the public closer to museums.
