Democrat Pia Dandiya has won Florida’s newly redrawn 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar in a closely watched contest, according to a projection by CBS News. Her victory will make her the first South Asian American to represent Florida in the US House of Representatives.
The election attracted national attention and approximately $34 million in campaign spending. Dandiya’s win also marked a Democratic victory in a district reshaped through Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ congressional redistricting initiative ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
During her victory speech on November 3, Dandiya criticized state lawmakers over the revised congressional boundaries, arguing that voters had rejected the redistricting effort. She told supporters that the election demonstrated the importance of public participation in determining political representation.
Born and raised in Palm Beach County to Indian immigrant parents, Dandiya previously worked as a teacher and high school principal in Harlem. She also served as a White House Fellow and held a position at Apple. Her campaign focused on improving education, addressing affordability challenges and expanding economic opportunities.
Reflecting on her family’s immigration journey, Dandiya highlighted the significance of her election, describing it as a milestone for the next generation of her family.
Her Republican opponent, Askar, is a Naples-based businessman, Marine Corps veteran and restaurant franchising professional. He campaigned as a supporter of President Donald Trump and his administration’s policies.
The district covers areas across Palm Beach, Broward, Hendry and Collier counties, including communities stretching west toward Marco Island.
Looking ahead, Dandiya said she intends to represent people across political divisions, emphasizing that her priority in Washington will be working for communities rather than engaging in political confrontation. She is expected to take her seat when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.
