India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting scheduled for October 30–31, 2026. Hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the two-day gathering will address pressing global economic concerns, particularly energy security, international supply chains and the uninterrupted movement of commercial shipping. Jaishankar is also scheduled to attend a Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and hold bilateral discussions with several international counterparts.
The agenda carries particular importance for India, which depends heavily on overseas supplies of crude oil, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fertilizers. Ongoing tensions in West Asia and disruptions affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz have intensified concerns about the reliability of essential imports. A US State Department official emphasized that keeping major maritime routes accessible without unauthorized charges or restrictions is crucial not only for energy transportation but also for fertilizer and food supplies.
Washington has also highlighted the importance of affordable and reliable energy access for economic development and emerging technologies. Discussions are expected to explore vulnerabilities in critical mineral supplies, raw materials and manufacturing-related supply chains, along with possible collective responses to geopolitical disruptions.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed her participation in the third Quad ministerial meeting of the year, involving Australia, India, Japan and the United States. She also highlighted Australia’s support for the EU-led No Fees/No Tolls initiative, which opposes unauthorized shipping charges that could undermine freedom of navigation.
The Atlanta gathering will bring together representatives from several major economies, including Russia, China, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and Saudi Arabia. The United States has described its G20 presidency as a return to core priorities, emphasizing economic growth, energy, innovation, trade and economic security.
Following the meetings, Jaishankar will travel to Antigua and Barbuda for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting from November 1–4. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is scheduled to host the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Miami on December 14–15, 2026.
