Indian pharmaceutical company Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is strengthening its support for medical research and education in the United States with a $2.5 million gift to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
The contribution has established the Sun Professorship in Dermatology, an endowed academic position designed to support research, education and professional training in the field. The endowment is also intended to provide sustained support for academic leadership in dermatology over the long term.
Dr. Mark G. Lebwohl has been appointed as the inaugural holder of the professorship. He was formally installed during a ceremony on October 6 at Hatch Auditorium at The Mount Sinai Hospital.
The new professorship is expected to contribute to the advancement of dermatology by supporting scientific research while helping train future specialists. Sun Pharma said the initiative will play a role in preparing the next generation of dermatologists and advancing knowledge in an important area of healthcare.
The company said its investment reflects a broader commitment to supporting institutions and professionals working to improve dermatological care. Ahmad Naim, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer for North America at Sun Pharma, said continued progress in dermatology depends on investing in the people and institutions developing the field.
Naim added that the new professorship represents Sun Pharma’s long-term commitment to academic leadership and the advancement of dermatology.
Endowed professorships provide universities with continuing financial resources to support academic positions, research and education. By establishing the new dermatology professorship, Sun Pharma is contributing to an academic environment where research and specialized medical training can continue over the long term.
The initiative also highlights the growing presence of Indian pharmaceutical companies in the US healthcare and research ecosystem. Sun Pharma has built a significant position in the American dermatology market and said it is the second-largest pharmaceutical dermatology company in the United States by prescription volume.
The Mount Sinai partnership brings together an Indian pharmaceutical company and a major US medical institution around research, education and specialist training. The $2.5 million endowment is expected to provide lasting support for dermatology while contributing to the development of future medical professionals and researchers.
