India and Thailand are looking to give their economic partnership fresh momentum, with senior officials discussing expanded trade, investment and closer connections between businesses in the two countries.
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun in New Delhi to explore opportunities for deeper commercial cooperation. The discussions at Vanijya Bhawan centered on creating new avenues for businesses while promoting more balanced and sustainable economic growth.
Both sides considered measures that could help increase bilateral trade and investment, including greater cooperation between private-sector companies. The ministers also stressed the importance of stronger trade promotion efforts in India and Thailand, which could help businesses identify new markets, build commercial networks and develop long-term partnerships.
A major focus of the meeting was the ongoing review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement, or AITIGA. Goyal and Suthumpun emphasized the need to move the review forward through more intensive engagement under the India-Thailand Joint Trade Committee.
The two countries are seeking a trade framework that delivers improved market access while remaining balanced and beneficial to both sides. Faster progress on the review could help address existing trade concerns and create a more favorable environment for businesses operating across the wider India-ASEAN economic corridor.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the ministers to engage with Thai companies working in a range of emerging and established industries. Representatives from sectors including space technology, cold-chain logistics, food processing, innovation, and health and wellness participated in the interaction.
Their involvement highlighted the breadth of commercial opportunities available between India and Thailand. Beyond traditional trade, both countries are increasingly exploring partnerships involving technology, supply chains, innovation and specialized services.
The latest discussions build on longstanding cultural, strategic and civilizational connections between the two nations. Officials reaffirmed their shared interest in developing a stronger economic relationship supported by private-sector participation and expanded investment.
With both countries seeking greater economic opportunities, India and Thailand are positioning closer business cooperation as an important pillar of their bilateral relationship. The AITIGA review, meanwhile, remains a key component of efforts to improve trade conditions and strengthen India’s wider economic engagement with Southeast Asia.
