India’s air cargo industry is experiencing strong expansion, with cargo volumes rising by nearly 40% in recent years, according to Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu. The government is now working to build modern cargo infrastructure capable of supporting the country’s growing trade and logistics requirements.
Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Naidu said the development of world-class air cargo hubs and specialized facilities remains an important priority. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader focus on improving India’s logistics network and creating more efficient connections for the movement of goods.
The rapid growth in cargo traffic reflects the increasing role of aviation in India’s wider logistics ecosystem. Modern air freight facilities can help businesses move products more quickly while improving connectivity between domestic markets and international destinations. Expanding this infrastructure is therefore expected to support both trade and the wider growth of the aviation sector.
Naidu also pointed to a major private-sector initiative at Delhi airport. FedEx and GMR Airport are partnering to establish a dedicated air cargo facility, a project expected to add capacity and strengthen the capital’s position as an important logistics hub.
The planned facility is part of a broader effort to develop specialized infrastructure rather than relying solely on existing airport resources. Dedicated cargo facilities can improve the handling, processing and movement of shipments while helping airports respond to rising freight demand.
The government’s emphasis on cargo infrastructure comes as India seeks to improve its overall logistics performance and strengthen supply-chain connectivity. A more efficient air freight network could be particularly valuable for time-sensitive shipments and businesses operating across international markets.
During his interaction with reporters, Naidu also addressed the Air India incident involving a flight traveling from Phuket to Delhi. He said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is examining the incident and that a preliminary report is expected shortly.
The incident occurred on August 4, when the Delhi-bound aircraft reportedly experienced a sudden altitude loss of around 300 feet while cruising. The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the event.
Meanwhile, continued investment in cargo hubs, airport facilities and logistics connectivity is expected to play a significant role in India’s aviation ambitions. As freight volumes continue to increase, expanding specialized infrastructure could help the country build a stronger and more internationally competitive air cargo ecosystem.
