India and Mauritius are taking another step toward closer energy cooperation, with Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri meeting Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam during an official visit to the island nation. The discussions focused on expanding collaboration in the energy sector and supporting Mauritius as it works toward greater energy security and a smoother transition to cleaner energy sources.
During the August 20-22 visit, Puri met Ramgoolam to discuss ways India could continue supporting Mauritius’ energy requirements. According to the Indian High Commission, the two sides explored opportunities to strengthen their existing partnership and ensure that Mauritius has reliable access to essential fuels.
The visit also resulted in the exchange of two important agreements. One was a government-to-government memorandum covering cooperation in oil and gas. The other involved Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and the State Trading Corporation of Mauritius. Together, the arrangements are intended to provide Mauritius with dependable supplies of petrol, diesel, marine gas oil and Aviation Turbine Fuel.
The agreements are expected to offer Mauritius greater certainty over fuel availability while helping shield the country from sudden fluctuations in international energy prices. By establishing a more predictable supply framework, India and Mauritius aim to reinforce the island nation’s energy resilience and reduce potential risks linked to market volatility.
The latest developments come as the two countries continue to expand their broader strategic relationship. At a recent reception marking Mauritius’ 80th Independence Day, Indian High Commissioner Anurag Srivastava and President Dharambeer Gokhool highlighted the longstanding ties between the two nations.
Srivastava also pointed to several developments achieved during the previous year, including the Enhanced Strategic Partnership, a Special Economic Package worth $680 million, the launch of a Renal Transplant Unit and the delivery of 100 electric buses.
The two countries are also looking ahead to new areas of collaboration. Planned initiatives include a joint satellite project and an e-judiciary system, reflecting the increasingly diverse nature of India-Mauritius relations beyond traditional economic and diplomatic cooperation.
The independence celebration brought together senior Mauritian officials, lawmakers, ministers, business representatives, community organizations, media professionals and supporters of India, underscoring the depth of the relationship between the two countries.
