India and Tanzania discussed ways to deepen parliamentary cooperation, capacity building and skill development during a meeting between Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Tanzania National Assembly Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu in Arusha.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 153rd International Parliamentary Union Assembly, where parliamentary delegations from around the world have gathered to discuss issues concerning governance, democracy, development and international cooperation.
During the meeting, Harivansh congratulated Zungu on Tanzania’s successful hosting of the 153rd IPU Assembly. The discussions focused on strengthening institutional links between the parliaments of India and Tanzania, with particular attention to capacity building and the development of parliamentary skills.
Harivansh is leading the Indian parliamentary delegation at the IPU Assembly in Arusha. The delegation includes Lok Sabha members Anurag Thakur, Aparajita Sarangi, Sanjay Jaiswal, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Lata Wankhede, Bijuli Kalita Medhi and N. K. Premachandran, along with Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra.
The IPU Assembly is centred on the theme of enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all. The Indian delegation is participating in meetings, panel discussions and workshops addressing a range of contemporary global issues.
Harivansh is scheduled to participate in the IPU Governing Council, the General Debate, discussions on the emergency item and the hearing involving candidates for the position of IPU President.
The Indian delegation’s broader engagements cover subjects including democracy, human rights, global peace, sustainable development and women’s participation. Discussions also extend to science and technology, counter-terrorism, physical and mental health, critical minerals, artificial intelligence and the future of work.
Other areas on the agenda include maritime security, climate action and the conservation of mountain and ocean ecosystems. The discussions provide a platform for parliamentarians to exchange perspectives on emerging challenges and explore opportunities for international cooperation.
India’s participation in the IPU Assembly also reflects its continued engagement with multilateral parliamentary forums. The delegation is using the platform to present India’s perspectives on issues related to global peace, development, democracy and community empowerment.
The India-Tanzania parliamentary engagement comes against the broader backdrop of expanding ties between India and African countries. Strengthening parliamentary exchanges can provide an additional channel for institutional dialogue, knowledge sharing and capacity-building cooperation between the two nations.
