The Indian and U.S. navies have completed the eighth edition of their joint Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Exercise 2026 in Kochi, strengthening cooperation and operational coordination in specialized maritime missions.
The exercise concluded on August 14 at the Southern Naval Command, following several days of professional exchanges and intensive training. The Indian Navy said the drills were designed to allow personnel from both countries to share operational experience, techniques and best practices related to explosive ordnance disposal.
A key part of the exercise involved discussions between subject matter experts on emerging and real-time explosive threats. Participants examined procedures for dealing with improvised explosive devices, techniques for making hazardous devices safe, mine neutralization and the deployment of unmanned underwater systems.
The training also included a cross-training component focused on diving operations. Naval personnel practiced locating and recovering wrecks, using specialized equipment and carrying out slithering operations as part of tactical demonstrations. These activities were aimed at exposing teams to different operational methods while improving their ability to work together during complex maritime situations.
The exercise provided an opportunity for the diving teams of both navies to sharpen their technical capabilities and gain practical experience in specialized operations. The Indian Navy said the joint drills also helped improve mutual understanding between the participating forces.
Explosive ordnance disposal is a critical capability for naval forces operating in environments where mines, improvised explosive devices and other hazardous materials can threaten personnel and vessels. Joint exercises such as this allow participating forces to compare procedures and develop greater compatibility during potential real-world missions.
The latest edition also highlighted the growing defense and maritime cooperation between India and the United States. By conducting specialized training together, the two navies are seeking to improve their ability to coordinate during complex security situations and humanitarian or operational missions.
The successful conclusion of the Kochi exercise reflects the continued efforts by India and the U.S. to expand professional cooperation in specialized maritime operations. The Indian Navy said the training strengthened the competence of participating teams while enhancing interoperability and operational synergy between the two forces.
