India and Indonesia are taking steps to deepen their defense partnership through the 12th Army-to-Army Staff Talks, held in Lucknow from August 11 to 13. The discussions brought together representatives of both armies to explore ways to expand military cooperation, improve professional exchanges and strengthen coordination between their armed forces.
The Indian Army said the talks focused on broadening bilateral defense engagement, increasing opportunities for joint training and sharing military expertise. The discussions also highlighted the importance of maintaining strong military-to-military relations as India and Indonesia continue to develop their wider strategic partnership.
The Indonesian delegation was led by Brigadier General Ari Prasetya, while the Indian side participated in discussions aimed at identifying areas for greater operational cooperation. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to building a stronger strategic relationship and enhancing collaboration in the defense sector.
The latest talks follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Indonesia, where he met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for discussions covering a wide range of bilateral and regional issues. The leaders reviewed cooperation in defense and security, maritime affairs, trade, investment, energy, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, space, critical minerals, culture and tourism.
Several bilateral agreements and documents were also exchanged during Modi’s visit, covering areas such as maritime security, space cooperation, defense, healthcare, agriculture and science and technology. The two leaders also reaffirmed their shared interest in promoting peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific.
Military cooperation between the two countries has also expanded through multilateral exercises. Earlier this year, more than 400 troops from 12 nations participated in PRAGATI 2026 in Meghalaya. Indonesia was among the participating countries, with the exercise focusing on interoperability, regional coordination and collective security in the Indian Ocean Region.
The continued engagement reflects the growing importance India and Indonesia place on defense cooperation and regional stability. Through staff talks, joint exercises and broader strategic dialogue, both countries are seeking to strengthen military coordination while supporting peace and security across the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.
