Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Andhra Pradesh on August 1, marking a major step forward in regional infrastructure development. Built with an investment of nearly $600 million, the airport is expected to strengthen connectivity, support tourism, expand logistics networks, and encourage industrial growth in North Andhra.
The Andhra Pradesh government has positioned the airport as a transformative project that goes beyond transportation, aiming to create a foundation for economic expansion across the region. Officials believe the facility will help improve Visakhapatnam’s global connectivity while attracting investments in manufacturing, exports, technology, and employment-generating industries.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will formally open the airport terminal building and inspect the newly developed facilities with state leaders and senior officials. The inauguration event will also feature cultural performances highlighting the traditions of the region.
Developed through a Public-Private Partnership model by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited, the airport spans more than 2,700 acres and includes an aviation hub, education facilities, commercial zones, residential areas, and supporting infrastructure.
The airport has received regulatory approvals and safety clearances, including an aerodrome license from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Its first phase is designed to serve approximately 6 million passengers annually, with future expansion plans allowing capacity to reach 40 million passengers per year.
One of the airport’s key features is its 3,800-meter runway, which can accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 777, Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A330, and Airbus A340 models. The facility is equipped with modern navigation systems, advanced passenger processing technology, self-service facilities, smart security systems, and an integrated operational control center.
The airport is also expected to enhance India’s export capabilities through a cargo terminal with an annual handling capacity of 25,000 metric tonnes. Temperature-controlled storage facilities will support shipments of pharmaceuticals, marine products, and other high-value goods.
With stronger connections to Visakhapatnam Port, industrial corridors, and regional logistics networks, Bhogapuram is expected to develop into a major aviation and cargo hub on India’s eastern coastline.
The project incorporates sustainability measures, including recycled water systems and environmentally focused construction standards. The terminal design reflects Andhra Pradesh’s cultural heritage, featuring elements inspired by the Bay of Bengal and traditional artistic patterns.
The airport is projected to create opportunities across tourism, hospitality, aerospace, defense, manufacturing, information technology, and exports. Tourist destinations such as Araku, Lambasingi, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam are expected to benefit from improved air access.
Overall, Bhogapuram International Airport represents a significant infrastructure investment that could accelerate regional development, strengthen trade networks, and support Andhra Pradesh’s long-term economic growth.
