Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the formation of a high-level task force led by technology pioneer Nandan Nilekani to redesign India’s public examination framework. The initiative is intended to make the country’s examination process more dependable, transparent, and technology-focused while restoring confidence among students and their families.
Addressing students through a video message, the Prime Minister emphasized that protecting the future of young people remains one of the government’s top priorities. He said authorities have already intensified efforts to curb examination-related malpractice by taking strict action against individuals accused of manipulating recruitment and academic tests. According to Modi, several accused have already been imprisoned, while fast-track courts have been established to ensure quicker resolution of such cases.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen the legal framework governing public examinations. Proposed legislative changes are expected to introduce stricter penalties for organized cheating, paper leaks, and other fraudulent practices. The reforms are designed to ensure that investigations and court proceedings related to examination offenses are completed within defined timelines, helping deliver faster justice and discouraging future violations.
While discussing the need for stronger safeguards, Modi stressed that legal action alone is not enough. He noted that the examination system must evolve with changing times by embracing modern technology and implementing processes that enhance fairness and credibility. He said the newly constituted task force would play a central role in identifying practical solutions to improve the overall examination ecosystem.
Under Nilekani’s leadership, the expert panel will evaluate how advanced technologies can be integrated into every stage of the examination process. Its recommendations are expected to focus on strengthening transparency, improving operational efficiency, reducing vulnerabilities, and creating a more secure environment for candidates appearing in public examinations.
The announcement comes as the central government continues to respond to concerns surrounding irregularities in competitive examinations that have drawn widespread public attention in recent months. By combining stronger legal provisions with technology-based reforms, the government aims to establish a more robust examination system that students can trust. Once the task force submits its recommendations, authorities plan to implement the proposed measures at the earliest opportunity to improve the integrity and credibility of future examinations across the country.
