President Droupadi Murmu continued her landmark State Visit to Romania by holding high-level talks with Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan at Victoria Palace in Bucharest on Friday. The discussions centered on expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors, reflecting both nations’ commitment to building a stronger and more future-focused partnership. Senior officials, including Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George, participated in the meeting alongside representatives from both governments.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the leaders explored new opportunities to strengthen collaboration in trade, investment, clean energy, connectivity, and emerging technologies. These sectors have become central to the evolving relationship between India and Romania as both countries seek to enhance economic growth and innovation through deeper bilateral engagement.
Earlier in the day, President Murmu addressed the India-Romania Business Forum, encouraging stronger commercial ties and greater private-sector collaboration. Her visit marks a significant diplomatic milestone, as it is the first State Visit by an Indian President to Romania in nearly 30 years. She is accompanied by Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, along with Members of Parliament Dinesh Sharma and Vijay Baghel.
The visit follows President Murmu’s meeting on Thursday with Romanian President Nicusor Dan at Cotroceni Palace. She received a ceremonial welcome and a guard of honor before the two leaders held comprehensive discussions on the future of India-Romania relations. Their talks also covered regional and global developments, as well as opportunities for greater coordination in multilateral forums.
A key outcome of the presidential meeting was the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding aimed at expanding cooperation in science and technology, sports, and academic collaboration through the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Bucharest. These agreements are expected to deepen institutional ties and encourage greater cultural and educational exchanges.
President Murmu highlighted that India and Romania have enjoyed more than seven decades of friendly relations built on mutual respect, trust, and strong people-to-people connections. She noted that the partnership is entering a new phase driven by higher ambitions and broader cooperation.
Both sides reaffirmed that economic engagement remains a cornerstone of bilateral relations. The leaders pledged to increase trade and investment, strengthen resilient supply chains, foster closer business partnerships, and pursue the shared objective of doubling bilateral trade within the next three years.
