Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has held a series of high-level discussions with European Union officials and Belgian leaders in Brussels to strengthen India’s economic and strategic partnerships with Europe. The meetings focused on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, agriculture, clean energy, technology, and sustainable industrial development.
During his discussions with European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen, Goyal explored ways to deepen collaboration in the agri-food sector following the successful conclusion of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both sides discussed opportunities to create stronger agricultural supply chains, improve food security, and encourage sustainable growth in the farming and food processing sectors.
Goyal also met European Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra to discuss cooperation in renewable energy, green hydrogen, clean technologies, innovation, and investment. The talks highlighted the shared goal of developing resilient supply networks and advancing climate-focused initiatives while supporting economic growth.
The engagements reflected the increasing importance of the India-EU strategic economic relationship, with both sides emphasizing the need for greater collaboration in emerging industries and sustainable development. Officials highlighted that stronger economic ties could help promote innovation, attract investments, and create new opportunities for businesses in both regions.
As part of his July 14-15 visit to Belgium, Goyal also met Belgian Deputy Prime Minister David Clarinval to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation in areas including trade, technology, logistics, and workforce mobility. The minister emphasized the opportunities created by the India-EU Free Trade Agreement and its potential to transform commercial ties between the two regions.
During the visit, Goyal is scheduled to visit the Port of Antwerp and the Antwerp World Diamond Centre to explore partnerships in multimodal transportation, green logistics, supply chain resilience, and the international diamond industry. These discussions are expected to strengthen India’s cooperation with Belgium in key economic sectors.
The minister will also engage with industry representatives from sectors such as aerospace, defense, cybersecurity, specialty chemicals, battery recycling, and sustainable manufacturing. These meetings aim to encourage investment and build stronger industrial partnerships between Indian and European companies.
Additionally, Goyal is participating in the India-EU Business Roundtable and co-chairing the third India-EU Trade and Technology Council Ministerial Meeting. The platform focuses on advancing cooperation in trade, trusted technologies, and economic security.
The visit underscores India’s efforts to deepen its relationship with the European Union through increased trade, innovation-driven partnerships, and sustainable economic collaboration.
