India has dismissed reports claiming that negotiations for a trade agreement with the United States have reached a deadlock, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stating that discussions between the two countries are moving forward positively.
Goyal rejected a Reuters report suggesting that India was delaying an early agreement while seeking improved terms from Washington. Responding to the report on social media platform X, the minister described the claims as inaccurate and misleading, stating that both nations remain focused on achieving a mutually beneficial trade arrangement.
The minister said his meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer during Greer’s visit to New Delhi in June was productive. According to Goyal, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to creating a trade agreement that is balanced, commercially valuable, and beneficial for businesses, farmers, workers, and consumers in both countries.
He added that negotiation teams from India and the United States continue to work closely toward this goal and remain actively engaged in discussions.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal also denied reports suggesting difficulties in the negotiations. Speaking while releasing India’s trade data for June 2026, Agarwal said officials do not see any major hurdles preventing progress on the India-US trade agreement.
Agarwal highlighted recent diplomatic and trade engagements between the two countries, noting that Indian officials traveled to the United States in May, followed by a US delegation visiting India in June. These exchanges, he said, reflect ongoing cooperation and a constructive approach from both sides.
Addressing the broader global trade situation, Agarwal acknowledged that tariff-related measures introduced by the United States have created uncertainty among several trading partners. However, he emphasized that India’s discussions with Washington remain on a positive path.
The officials’ comments come as India and the United States continue efforts to strengthen economic ties through increased trade cooperation. Both governments have indicated that they are working toward a framework that supports economic growth while addressing the interests of key sectors in both countries.
